Mental Health Awareness Workshop
April 21  •  9:45 AM – 10:45 AM
What is mental illness? Mental illness doesn’t develop because of a person’s character or intelligence. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, a mental illness is a disorder of the brain that can make it difficult to cope with the ordinary demands of life. Mental illness is more common than we might think. According to National Institute of Mental Health, 1 in 5 adults experiences mental illness in a given year. 20% of youths between the ages of 13-18 may experience a mental health condition at some point during their life; for children ages 8-15 that estimate is 13%. Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for people aged 10–24.

Join this educational workshop to learn about common diagnosable mental health conditions and how you can help as caregivers, friends or educators. Presented by Maggie Luo from NAMI NJ – CAMHOP (Chinese American Mental Health Outreach Program in NJ). http://www.naminj.org/programs/multicultural/camhop/

NAMI New Jersey (NAMI NJ) is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness. Through education, support, advocacy and public awareness programs NAMI NJ fosters understanding about mental illness, confronts stigma often associated with mental disorders, advocates for public policies that benefit those affected by mental illness, and promotes research into the causes, treatment and recovery of mental health disorders.
